The immediate treatment for acute pain is bed rest, on a flat hard
surface and in the position which best alleviates the pain. Analgesics
help to soothe the pain. Injection of anaesthetics, under medical prescription,
may be required in some cases.
The pain may also be relieved by applying heat to the lumbar region
to relax the muscles in the area, as their tension increases the pain.
An electric blanket or hot water bottle are useful.
The same effect may be achieved by a prolonged gentle massage using
the masster plus Foam Rotors at low speed. This has an extremely relaxing
effect and immediately alleviates the pain.
After the intense pain of the crisis has passed, we recommend a deeper
massage with the Serrated Rotors at slow speed over all the affected
area and up the back towards the neck.
If the pain continues, the column may be immobilised by a corset. Some
cases of sciatica may require surgery to relieve the nerve or repair
the disc. When the stability of the joint between the vertebra is insufficient,
arthrodesis, the surgical immobilisation of the affected vertebra, may
be employed.
Another possible treatment is the injection of chemotripsine into the
damaged disc. This enzyme dissolves the tissues, reducing the volume
of the hernia and avoiding the need for surgery.
In cases of chronic pain, sharp movement must be avoided and the lumbar
and abdominal muscles must be sufficiently strengthened to support the
spine and avoid the need for a corset.
Keeping down body weight is also important to avoid overloading the
lumbar area.
Once again, masster plus massages help keep weight down, maintain healthy
lymph flow and muscular tone, they also alleviate the intense pain caused
by these disorder.
These masster plus massages relax the muscles and favour the decompression
of the sciatic nerve in cases of sciatica and alleviate the pain caused
by muscular tension in lumbago
